Chapter 11

Mackenna

I fall asleep in Cox’s arms, and I feel safe and loved and protected.

And it terrifies me to no end.

But I don't jerk away from him when I wake. I just stay there, in his arms, until I realize he's awake too.

“Were you watching me sleep?” I ask him.

“I woke a moment or two before you did.”

“Did something wake us?”

“No. Are you hungry?”

I shake my head even though I could eat. “I… You haven’t been to Alea in three years.”

“Longer,” he admits. “I visited other planets to find you—to find my mate—before I went to Earth.”

“It hasn’t…” I swallow hard. “It hasn’t been since you were in your twenties since you’ve been home, has it? Please tell me that isn’t the case.”

“A decade,” he says. “I tried for the initial trip for a decade. That’s how long Leanians will typically try for and then gave up, and I’ll admit that I gave up for a time.”

“You don’t look like you’re old,” I murmur.

“I’m sixty-nine.”

I burst out laughing. “Of course you are.”

He furrows his brow. “What do you mean?”

“I’ll explain it to you another time. I want to talk now.”

“Ah, so it’s something sexual.”

“Yes. Now, continue. You gave up.”

“I did, and I stayed here on Leanian for another decade. I had waited a bit for my first trip, until I was thirty, because I wanted to spend more time with my siblings, but I could wait no longer.”

“So… thirty, forty, fifty. You haven’t been gone for almost two decades, have you?”

“It’s been a long, long quest to find you, Mackenna.”

“Do you have anything else for me to wear?” I ask, sitting up. “This smells like sex, and I think it has cum stains on it.”

“I’m sorry. Let me see what I can do.”

He kisses me, dresses, and leaves the room only to return with a small plate of food and a drink that reminds me more of half and half. I eat as he leaves again, and when he returns, he has a dress that is little more than a slip.

“It’s not much, but it’s the best I can do,” he says. “If I had more time, I could make you—”

“Wait, you just went and made this for me now?” I interrupt.

“Yes.”

“But you don’t know my measurements.”

He smirks. “Don’t I?” He holds out his arms as if he’s hugging me. “My arms do.”

I try the dress on. It fits like it was made for me, which it had been.

“You really did learn a lot of trades, didn’t you?”

“I learned from people on so many planets, and I’m more than willing to teach you and any future children, and if we don’t have any, maybe my siblings will allow me to teach their children. Knowledge should never be wasted.”

“No,” I murmur.

He eyes the plate. I ate exactly half. “Aren’t you hungry? Do you not like it?”

“I saved it for you, but yes, I’m hungry.” I bite my lower lip. “You’ve been gone for almost twenty years. You should go and see your family.
